Your engagement session is the perfect chance to get comfy in front of the camera before your big day, and of course, celebrate this major milestone in your relationship! My couples often come to me wondering how to choose their engagement photo location, so I thought I’d share my tips with you here as well!

Think About the Vibe You Want

First things first, think about what you want your engagement photos to feel and look like! Are you dreaming of a cozy, intimate setting like your home or the local coffee shop? Maybe you’re both adventurous and love to go exploring so something with epic landscapes make more sense? Maybe you want something fun and quirky that shows off your personalities! Whatever vibe you’re going for, your engagement photo location should match that energy.

Reflect on Your Relationship

Where did you first meet? Where was your first date? Is there a special spot that holds a lot of memories for you two? Using a meaningful location can add an extra layer of emotion to your photos. Plus, you’ll feel more relaxed and natural in a place that’s special to both of you!

Consider the Seasons and Weather

Seasons can totally transform your engagement photo location. Depending on where you are late spring and summer season will have wildflower fields, fall is popular for the colorful foliage and winter brings those beautiful snowy settings. Think about the time of year and what kind of backdrop you want. Do you love the idea of a snowy engagement session or are you dreaming of golden fall leaves? This can help narrow down your choices.

Explore the City or Go by Nature

Think about whether you’re drawn more to the city, or maybe you LOVE being by nature! Urban settings can offer cool architectural elements, vibrant street art, and a dynamic vibe. While natural locations like parks, forests, and beaches provide serene and picturesque backdrops. Decide what feels more “you”!

Practical Considerations for Your Engagement Photo Location

Think about the logistics of your chosen engagement photo location. Is it easily accessible? Will you need a permit to shoot there? Is there a plan B if the weather doesn’t cooperate?

Include Personal Details

Maybe there’s a hobby you both love that could be incorporated into your location. Love hiking? Head to your favorite trail! Avid coffee drinkers? A cute local café could be the perfect spot. The more personal and unique, the better!

Ask for Recommendations for Your Engagement Photo Location

Sometimes the best locations are the ones you might not think of! Ask your photographer (hey, that’s me!) for recommendations. I’ve got tons of experience and might know of hidden gems that would be perfect for your shoot. In fact, I provide an engagement photo location guide to all my clients covering my favorite spots in the Midwest, Alberta, and Hawaii!

Featured Engagement Session in the Blog: Taylor & Jacey

Taylor and Jacey chose the Blue Mounds State Park, MN, as their engagement photo location and the scenery there was absolutely breathtaking. They were both so sweet and playful with each other and I had so much fun capturing their session. The Blue Mounds State Park offered a variety of settings for their session, from a lush field to rocky cliffs. They also did an outfit change to fit each of the locations! And all of those things combined allowed us to capture different vibes and different angles of their personalities and love story.
