If you’ve ever scrolled through photos of Kauai and thought, “I want to get married there,” this one’s for you! I’m seeing more and more couples that are ditching the 150-person huge venue wedding and choosing something smaller, more intentional, and wayyy more them. A micro wedding in Kauai might just be the most beautiful version of that!

I photographed Shelby and John’s January wedding at Timbers Kauai, and it was one of those days that reminded me exactly why I love what I do. They had stunning florals, a venue that felt like it was made for moments like this, and two people completely present with the people they love most! It was filled with all of my favorite things about weddings, and if you’re considering something similar, I wanted to share everything you need to know, coming from a local photographer!

(P.S. If you’re looking for a Hawaii wedding photographer to document your day, you can inquire with me here!)

What Even is a Micro Wedding?

A micro wedding is typically a smaller, more intimate ceremony! It’s usually 20–30 guests or less, and it has all the elements of a traditional wedding (ceremony, florals, photos, dinner) just scaled down in the best way possible.

The difference is that you actually get to feel it. You’re not rushing table to table, trying to say hi to your college roommate’s plus one. You’re just present, you’re in it, and in a place like Kauai, that matters so much!

Kalea and Jaydon (pictured below) are another perfect example of this done so well. Their day was simple, sweet, and completely intentional, a private ceremony, just the two of them, followed by golden hour portraits on the beach. There was no timeline stress, no performance, literally just two people choosing each other on one of the most beautiful islands in the world. It was the kind of day that reminds you what weddings are actually for.

Why Kauai Is Perfect for a Micro Wedding

Here’s the thing most couples don’t realize: Kauai is genuinely one of the easiest islands to get married on if you’re keeping it intimate. The venues here are built for smaller celebrations, the scenery does half the work, and the overall vibe of the island, slow, lush, a little wild, naturally lends itself to a wedding that feels personal rather than produced!

A Kauai destination wedding also naturally trims your guest list without any awkward conversations. When your wedding requires a flight, only the people who are truly there for you will make the trip. That’s not a downside; that’s actually one of the biggest gifts you can give yourself on your wedding day!

Shelby and John’s day at Timbers Kauai and Hualani’s Restaurant was a great example of this. The setting was stunning, the team at Kauai Wedding Planners made sure everything ran super easily—and because the guest count was small, the whole day felt unhurried and full of actual connection (my favorite kind of wedding day).

The Vendors That Make It All Come Together

One of my biggest tips for planning a micro wedding in Kauai is to trust local vendors!! I can’t stress this enough, especially on an island! They know the light, the locations, and the logistics in a way that just can’t be replicated from the mainland.

For Shelby and John’s day, the vendor team was incredible:

When your vendor team knows and loves Kauai the way these people do, it shows in every single photo!

What to Know Before You Plan Your Micro Wedding

A few practical things worth knowing if you’re dreaming of an intimate Kauai wedding:

Marriage licenses are easy! You can apply online ahead of time; it’s about $65 and valid for 30 days. You’ll need to visit a marriage license agent in Lihue to finalize it, but it’s genuinely simple! Here is a link for more info!

Beach weddings have a 30-person cap. Per Kauai County law, public beach ceremonies max out at 30 guests, and no furniture or arches are allowed on the sand. A venue like Timbers gives you way more flexibility, and it looks amazing!

January is a hidden gem. Shoulder season means fewer crowds, more availability, and those moody, gorgeous winter skies. Shelby and John’s January date was literally a dream. I highly recommend this time of year.

Hire a planner! Even for a small wedding, having someone local who knows the vendors, the permits, and the flow of the day is worth every penny. You can also check out my guide to Maui wedding vendors you’ll regret not hiring sooner for more on why the right team changes everything!

The Part That Actually Makes It Special

This is the part I wish more couples heard before they started planning! When Kalea and Jaydon wrapped up their ceremony, and we headed to the beach for portraits, there was this moment, completely unplanned, totally quiet, where they just stood there together looking out at the water. No one was telling them where to stand, no schedule pulling them away, just them, the ocean, and the kind of stillness you only get when you’ve stripped a wedding day down to what actually matters.

That’s what a micro wedding in Kauai gives you. And Shelby said it perfectly after their day too: “Thank you so much for the best day and the best photos to remember it.”

No filler moments, watching the clock, just the people you love most, an island that takes your breath away, and photos you’ll look at for the rest of your life. If you’re wondering whether intimate weddings are worth it, I wrote more about that in my post on elopements vs. weddings. It might be exactly what you need to read right now!

FAQ: Planning a Micro Wedding in Kauai

Do I need a wedding planner for a Kauai destination wedding? You don’t have to, but it makes a huge difference, especially when planning from the mainland. A local planner has vendor relationships, permit knowledge, and island logistics that are hard to replicate on your own.

Can I legally get married in Kauai if I live in another state? Yes! Hawaii welcomes out-of-state couples. You’ll apply for your marriage license online, then visit a local agent in Lihue. Your officiant files the paperwork within three days of the ceremony, and the certificate gets mailed to you.

What’s the best time of year for a micro wedding in Kauai? Honestly, Kauai is gorgeous year-round. Spring and fall tend to have the mildest weather and fewer crowds. Winter (like January!) offers a more intimate, moody vibe, and is often more available and budget-friendly.

What makes Kauai better than other Hawaiian islands for a micro wedding? Kauai has more raw, natural energy than Maui or Oahu. It feels less touristy and more magical,  which makes it perfect for couples who want their wedding to feel like an experience, not just an event.
