The Bonneville Salt Flats offers a pristine, surreal backdrop, making it a perfect setting for an elopement. It is so gorgeous in its simplicity and it allows you, the couple, to really stand out and remain the focus of your special day. So, if you’ve been considering a Salt Flats wedding or elopement, this guide will help you plan the perfect day here!

Best Time to Elope in Bonneville Salt Flats

Since the Salt Flats are essentially a desert, the weather can be really harsh. It can be below-freezing in the winter and very hot in the summer. I recommend eloping here during early fall, because the weather is still warm, but much milder than summertime, and most of the crowds will have left as well. Spring is another potentially good time for your Bonneville Salt Flats elopement, but it can be really rainy!

If you do choose to elope here during the summer, bring extra water and sunscreen – you’re definitely going to need it. You’ll also need to check online for any racing events because those are super popular there during summer, especially in August. I also recommend eloping here during the sunset or sunrise and planning for a weekday elopement to avoid crowds and get amazing light and views!

Bonneville Salt Flats Wedding Legal Requirements

To make your Salt Flats elopement official, you’ll need a marriage license from the state of Utah. The Tooele County clerk’s office closest to the Bonneville Salt Flats offers an online application process, making it very easy and convenient when you’re traveling. You can check out more about the process here. There is also no waiting period, so you can grab your license and get married on the same day!

Officiant and Witnesses

For a legal marriage in Utah, an officiant must sign your marriage license. If you’re eloping at the Bonneville Salt Flats, remember that you’ll also need two witnesses over 18. These can be guests, vendors, or even people you meet on your special day.

Permits for your Bonneville Salt Flats Wedding

Since the Bonneville Salt Flats are under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management, a special use permit is necessary for a Salt Flats wedding. However, if you plan to marry legally elsewhere and you’re just there for the epic photos, no permit is needed!
