Over the summer I had the honor of capturing Lauren & Caleb’s adventurous Banff engagement photos. I’m originally from Canada, and I love any excuse to shoot back home, especially in Banff. It’s like this place has a piece of my heart. And guess what? On the same day as Lauren and Caleb’s session, I got engaged here too! It was such an incredible day filled with so much nostalgia!
If you’ve been considering capturing your engagement or elopement photos in Banff, here’s all you need to know to make it happen!
Why Banff?
Whether you’re local to Banff or you’re considering traveling here for your session, you won’t regret it! It’s got these insane views that look like they’re straight out of a nature documentary. We’re talking about epic mountain backdrops, crystal clear lakes, and skies so big you won’t believe it.
Best Time for Banff Engagement Photos
Banff is beautiful all year round, so it’s really about the vibe you’d like for your engagement or elopement photos.
Spring is nice with warmer temperatures and snow-capped mountains, however, the weather often is a mixed bag. Summer is definitely a great option with longer days, blooming wildflowers and warm days, however, it’s also peak tourist season, so we’d need to find more secluded spaces to avoid the crowds.
Early fall is really beautiful with all the golden fall colors. The weather is cooler but still nice and it’s also less crowded than summer. But, you may often get early snowfalls and therefore higher elevations might be off-limits.
Winter is great if you’re after that winter wonderland vibe and want to include some fun winter activities into your session like skiing or skating. There are fewer people around, and we can also find indoor spaces for a very romantic, cozy session. The biggest downsides are that it can be VERY cold and that a lot of areas close for the season.
Banff Permits & Legal Requirements
If you want to capture Banff engagement photos or a couples session, you don’t need to get any permits yourself, but your photographer will need a separate business license.
However, if you’re planning a wedding or elopement, you will need to get a permit. If you’re having an intimate wedding or elopement of up to 20 people, you can get married pretty much anywhere. If you want a larger wedding, there are specific venues available for your big day.
Here’s all you need to know about the legal requirements and the application process! If you don’t want to deal with permits for Banff, you can also take photos in surrounding areas like Canmore or Kananaskis, which are just as beautiful!
To make your marriage legal, you will need an Alberta marriage license. You can check out all the specifics about acquiring one here!
